Do Brita Filters Remove PFAS Contamination?

Not all Brita filters are able to remove enough PFAS to meet the EPA requirements for safe drinking water. However, some of their whole house and under sink filtration systems have the capacity to remove up to 100% PFAS. They also remove most other contaminants that can be bad for your health, affect the taste of your water, or leave stains on your appliances and clothes.

In this article, I’ll be discussing two of the best filters for removing PFAS, along with a general discussion on Brita products.

The Brita Filter That Can Remove PFAS

  • Brita Pro Titanium Series Whole House Water Filter

Brita has recently development a new Titanium Series Whole House Water Filter. Compared to bulky traditional whole house filters, the new Brita filter looks amazing, with a sleek titanium housing, and has numerous advantages.

It is a relatively compact filter that is easier to install than the large whole house filtration systems we’re used to. The filter has an incredible flow rate and utilizes really advanced filtration media that removes PFAS to EPA safety standards.

The filter also removes impurities and sediment that could stain clothes, dishes, faucets, and fixtures. A dense membrane, combined with activated charcoal, and other types of filtration media ensure that your water is crystal clear, tastes great, and is free of nasty odors and harmful contaminants. Brita filters are also environmentally friendly. They’re safe for landfill sites.

The Brita Pro Titanium filter is a very elegant product and has all the hallmarks of exceptional quality. It’s made in the US with ISO 9001:2008 certification. It has been designed for hassle-free maintenance and looks like it should last for many years without any expensive repairs.

This is an all-in-one filter that is easily installed at the point of entry. This means that all the faucets and water outlets in your home are supplied with superbly purified water. Your pipes and fixtures are also protected from sediment buildup and blockages.

In a nutshell, the Brita Pro Titanium Whole House Filter has everything we want from an advanced filtration system. Not only are you protected against health hazards associated with PFAS, you also have just about the cleanest, purest water that anyone can hope for. It is manufactured to the highest standards and is wonderfully practical. The system is also customized for your needs depending on the size of your home and filtration requirements.

Alternative to Brita Filter for PFAS Removal

  • Hydroviv Under Sink Water Filter

The Hydroviv under sink filter is relatively inexpensive and is also one of the best for removing PFAS and PFOA from water. It’s super easy to install (around 15-minutes). Another great ease is that it is customized when you order the filter. Simply supply your zip code and you’ll receive a filter that is perfect for the water in your area.

Hydroviv Under Sink Filter

Apart from PFAS removal, the Hydroviv ensures that your water is free just about all known contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, VOCs, chlorine, GenX, and more.

This is one of the most compact under sink water filtration systems and does not have a bulky storage tank. The single filter cartridge is quick and easy to replace, making maintenance a synch.

Arguably one of the best under sink filters for PFAS, the Hydroviv is also one of the easiest to install. It provides a complete water filtration solution, ensuring that water is perfectly safe and tastes great.

Brita Filters Overview

Brita manufacture an enormous variety of pitcher, countertop, and water bottle filters. The brand is probably most famous for their range of pretty exceptional water filter pitchers.

Brita Water Filter Pitchers

There’s a virtually endless list of options for Brita pitchers in different sizes, colors, and filtration capabilities. Some have additional features like an electronic filter indicator, smart light filter indicator, easy fill lid, and auto fill lid.

When it comes down to it, the small filters used for any type of pitcher will never be as effective as larger whole house or under sink filters. This is why they are not approved for removing PFAS. For most regular purposes, Brita pitcher filters should be adequate.

There are three options for Brita pitcher filter cartridges:

  • Standard Pitcher and Dispenser Filter: Lasts approximately 2 months (40 gallons). Removes most common contaminants, like mercury, copper, and chlorine but does not remove lead.
  • Elite Filter: Lasts approximately 6 months (120 gallons). Improved filtration, capable of removing up to 99% of lead from water.
  • Stream Filter: Similar to the standard filter, supplying 40 gallons of filtered water. These filters are used with systems equipped with Filter-As-You-Pour technology which means you don’t have to wait for the water to flow down through the filter before you can use it.

Brita pitchers are an economical way of supplying clear, great tasting water. They don’t have a particularly large capacity (6 cup or 10 cup) and take some time to filter the water. This means you have to wait while the water trickles through the filter before you can use it. If you have a relatively safe municipal water supply, Brita water filter pitchers are a cost-effective and easy to use solution.

Brita Water Dispensers

Brita water dispensers, or countertop filters, use the same technology as their water filter pitchers. They offer the same three filter options: Standard, Elite, and Stream filters.

The difference between water dispensers and pitchers is mostly about capacity. Brita water dispensers have a higher capacity of 25 or 27 cups. They are also more convenient as water is dispensed by means of a spigot, making it easier to fill a glass or bottle with filtered water.

Brita Faucet Filter Systems

These are compact filters with a built-in faucet. You install them directly to the main water supply and always have filtered water on tap. They are easy to install and come in a variety of styles and finishes.

Faucet water filters use fairly large stream filter with a 100-gallon capacity. While these filters are not certified for complete PFAS removal, they are great for removing chlorine, along with many other chemical contaminants and some metals.

Brita Water Bottle Filters

Brita manufacture a range of elegant water bottles with built in filters. They range in size from 20 to 36 ounces. These bottles offer fairly basic filtration and are designed mostly to remove chlorine and other common contaminants from tap water.
