The Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner and the BISSELL SpotClean Professional Portable are both first rate products from respected manufacturers. You could do much worse than buying either of these products. In order to determine which of these products is the best for your needs, you have to go beyond the specs and marketing buzzwords. Every ‘real world’ carpet cleaning situation is different, and the right tool for one job might not be the best for another.
Battle of the Spot Cleaners

Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner
A unique feature of Rug Doctor products is the motorized scrub brush. The Rug Doctor Spot Cleaner is the only product of this type on the market with a powerful oscillating motorized brush. The motorized brush offers some unique advantages–it not only frees you from having to do the scrubbing yourself but does a more effective job. The motorized brush moves 1200 times per minute enabling it to attack the most difficult stains. More brush movement means a better job ‘feathering’ the carpet, or blending the cleaned area with the rest of the fabric. You won’t be able to notice that a spot was ever there!
One potential downside to the Rug Doctor stain cleaner is that it takes a ‘one size fits all’ approach to cleaning. The motorized brush is admittedly effective on a variety of stains and surface types, but for some cleaning situations specialized attachments are helpful. The only customization allowed by the Rug Doctor unit comes via a ‘retractable handle’. It might be easier to move around and use than other units but depending on your specific application the uniformity of the cleaning process could be an issue.
BISSELL Spot Clean Professional
Based strictly on its ‘statistical profile’ the BISSELL Spot Clean Professional looks and feels like a more substantial piece of machinery than many competing units. It’s bigger and features a more powerful motor than the Rug Doctor Portable. There’s obviously a trade-off in the physical heft of the product–the BISSELL product might be a more ‘substantial’ device, but the Rug Doctor is easier to carry around. The BISSELL stain cleaner also has no wheels meaning that you’ll have to pick it up and carry it to move it from one place to another. The BISSELL does have a substantially longer power cord than the Rug Doctor carpet cleaner.
The BISSELL product also requires more ‘elbow grease’ than the Rug Doctor unit. While the Rug Doctor’s motorized brush does the scrubbing work for you, the BISSELL’s brush is manually operated. Depending on the specific cleaning application, however, this might be a good thing. Furthermore, the lack of a ‘specialized’ brush head makes the BISSELL stain remover more ‘configurable’. The ability to ‘reconfigure’ the BISSELL cleaner could be essential for certain jobs and applications.
The BISSELL Spot Clean Professional comes with a 6″ stair tool and 3″ tough stain tool, with additional tools, filters and cleaning solution varieties available for purchase. These specialized tools work well with the BISSELL’s highly flexible cleaning hose and gives the product the versatility necessary to deal with even the most unusual stains in the strangest locations.
Bissell or Rug Doctor ?
Both the Rug Doctor Portable and the BISSELL Spot Clean Professional are excellent products with great reputations and legions of satisfied customers. The choice of one versus the other comes down to its application–what kind of stains do you need to clean and where do you need to clean them? The Rug Doctor Portable is likely the best choice for
cleaning ‘random’ household stains including those caused by children and pets . Its portability and ease of use allow it to go wherever the stains are, and its motorized brush is also a welcome feature for this use.The BISSELL Spot Clean Professional is likely the better unit for more specific cleaning needs. Cleaning upholstery, detailing the interior of the car and similar clearly defined uses are where the versatile configurations and superior statistical profile of the BISSELL shine. It might not be as easy to move it from place to place to tackle the ever-changing variety of stains, but for specific cleaning jobs it is a very powerful tool.
thanks for this informational review, you really helped me make a choice between the two carpet cleaners.
I bought the rug doctor and it worked quite well on stairs, on spots on furniture, and on small areas of carpet.
It is hard to get into tight spaces as the sprayer is recessed back a bit.
Finally, after less than 90 days the sprayer quit working entirely and now I have to return it. Not so good.
The Rug Doctors oscilating brush is not what I expected. Only the center brissels move, not all of them. Also, when you push hard enough they stop, so it isnt as powerful as they make it seem. I think it is still a good product but they overhyped it some.
Bissell has leaked for me a couple times so after the first time I just thought it was maybe just a defect but the second one does too so am defintitley going to ge the Rug Doctor unless someone can tell me of a better one
I bought the Rug Doctor and the nozzle kept leaking. I had several stains to try it out and it got less than half of them out. I am returning due to the leaking. I ordered the Bissell so now I will be able to compare them myself. Maybe I got a bad Rug Doctor.
Hi Melody, would be interested to know how you find the Bissell compares to the Rug Doctor. Which one has more suction to get the dirty liquid out of the carpet?
Thanks
Do not waste your money on the Rug Doctor portable spot cleaner, it is a piece of junk! I thought I was buying a quality product but after only a couple of uses it quit spraying. I contacted the manufacturer and they replaced it so no problem. Well this machine fairly quickly also quit spraying…so back it went and they sent out what was now the third machine. Guess what that machine also quit spraying by its third use. All of these machines work at first but stop spraying within a few uses. I phoned and spoke with Rug Doctor concerning the poor quality of their product and asked to just be reimbursed so I can buy something else but no they could not do that. They offered to send me a fourth machine. I don’t want another piece of junk. I need a machine I can trust that when I need it to clean a stain it will work. My warranty expires soon so after that I am out of luck there are no more replacements. Not that getting a replacement was of any help. It only increased the aggravation of once again having something that was useless.
My RD Portable also quit spraying and the brush quit working too. RD support was zero help. After taking it apart I found that the circuit board had burned up some surface mount resistors (undersized). That board provided the low voltage for the brush motor and the spray switch, and also had an onboard relay that took the signal from the trigger to operate the spray pump. I couldn’t find an exact replacement but instead found a more powerful power supply board and a separate relay from Alibaba and with a bit of creative jerry-rigging got it all put together. Works like new and now I know it’s, if anything, overpowered.
I bought the rug doctor and in my opinion it is superior to bissell for the fact it has a motorized brush and the design I feel is stronger. As for the sprayer to stop working take an old toothbrush and hot water and scrub out the orifice or use a thin needle
I think people complain to much! They are both great machines when used properly, and for the applications in which they were intended. Someone upset because it’s not an excavator, or because they just used it and didn’t care for it is not a default in the product itself. Get a shovel, bucket of water, and a shop vac and stop giving useless bad reviews on a 100 product. If you want pro level equipment you will not find it in a Walmart price point!
You are absolutely on point. People have ridiculous expectations of everything they buy.
I have read the above thank you for the clarity. I am still indecisive in what product to buy. However, I would like to clarify a point which I believe has been done in error. Maybe its an older post. The RD Portable has a bigger motor 1300 watts and the Bissell pro has a 750 watts motor.
Also, the bissell seems more compact and easier to store. But what one is a better cleaner and with suction? I think the RD is or am I mistaken. Nevertheless if suctions as good as RD with the Bissell Pro, then I will be inclined to purchasing as there are great deals for both approaching to Black Friday deals!
