Superior Pump 91025 ¹⁄₅HP Utility Pump Review
As one of the cheapest submersible utility pumps, I’m quite impressed with overall quality displayed in this product. The housing is made of thermoplastic which will never rust. Many believe that plastic pumps are inferior, preferring cast iron or stainless steel. Perhaps this is true, but it all comes down to affordability. All the cheap pumps are plastic and is really about the quality of the plastics used. In this case, it seems to be pretty high-grade materials.
As someone who appreciates good engineering, this little utility pump has me more than impressed. The oil bathed motor is sealed by two stainless steel plates, with double O-rings. This ensures that water never gets in and oil never gets out. A major cause of premature pump failure is a result of oil leakage. The motor begins to overheat and simply doesn’t last. So, by paying extra attention to keeping the motor perfectly sealed, the Superior ¹⁄₅HP pump is one of the most durable and reliable.
Heavy-duty stainless steel jacketed shaft seals are another example of quality, improving both reliability and durability. The motor consists of solid copper windings and should keep running for many years without any issues.
For a pump that is one of the cheapest options, this an amazing feat. The pump can also handle solids up to ¹⁄₈”, which is another great aspect. To prevent larger debris from damaging the impeller, a removable filter mesh is fitted to the water intake at the base of the pump. For added convenience, this filter is removable for easy cleaning.
Two loops where the power cord enters the pump, serve as handles. This also allows you to attach a rope for easy lifting out of the water.
This is a delightfully compact little pump, fitting into the tightest of spaces. While the model 91025 is designed as a submersible utility pump, without a float switch, it can be easily used as a sump pump. You simply need to connect a float switch.
The pump has a high-discharge 1¼” NPT fitting. It’s easy enough to connect an adapter for a garden hose. The 10’ power cord is a good length and connects directly to a 120V household outlet.
No one expects a small ¹⁄₅HP utility pump to have much lifting capacity. This is another area where the Superior Pump is bound to impress. It can lift water up to 20’, with a pretty reasonable flow rate of 420 GPH. At 0’ vertical lift, the Superior 91025, will shift 1,560 GPH, and 840 GPH at 10’ vertical lift.
The split capacitor inductive electric motor is super-efficient, saving on electricity bills. At maximum startup boost of only 3.6 A, this pump runs normally at a little over 1A. Cheap to buy, cheap to run.
Buying a cheap pump often means a compromise on performance and it might not last that long. To this end, Superior Pump has does a fine a job. It should outlast most submersible pumps of a similar price. The Superior 91025 submersible utility pump is designed to perform reliably for years and is extremely powerful for its size. This means an improved pumping capacity coupled with low electricity consumption. The pump is backed by a respected brand and a 1-year warranty.
